I’m a big fan of stand-up and have begun venturing out to comedy spots to catch what the local scene has to offer. After some mixed experiences at open mics, I decided it was time to fork over some cash to see some tried-and-true performers at Mardi Gras’ Comedy Spot, also known as the Voodoo Lounge.
The Scottsdale nightclub offers visitors two options upon entrance: Mardi Gras’ familiar bar and music venue as well as the Voodoo Lounge’s Comedy Spot. The Voodoo Lounge has the authentic feel of a big city comedy club like those seen at the beginning of episodes of Seinfeld. Tables crowd the darkly lit room around a small stage at center.
Dirty Red a.k.a. Big Red a.k.a. the evening’s host who was apparently under the influence of something and would respond to any adjective followed by “Red” took to the stage first, and amid jokes that were admittedly funny, managed to introduce the comics for the night… not always by their actual names.
Among the highlights for the evening was Keith Wilson (or Mike Wilson according to Red’s introduction). Making his first appearance outside the Valley’s open mic circuit, Keith got the crowd roaring with his sharp-witted suggestions, like his pick-a-thing lottery and signs for homeless people guaranteed to encourage donations. Wilson’s striking resemblance to Edward Cullen’s skeleton was also a rich source of laughter for the crowd under Keith’s self-defacing but hilarious remarks.
Tucson’s DJ Polo was a welcome addition to the evening’s lineup, along with the Valley’s own Boomer Nichols, a self-proclaimed “dirty Catholic.”
California resident Darren Carter headlined the event, and if Keith, DJ, and Boomer certainly made the cover worthwhile, Carter sealed the night as a memorable experience for all present.
