Lyrically, the band sticks to the topic that has dominated pop music since its Stone Age: love. While no one will have an epiphany about the subject listening to Tell it to the Volcano, the lyrics are clever, and any band that can write a song titled “Like or Like Like” that doesn’t cause a mad dash for the fast-forward button shows promise.
With Tell it to the Volcano, Miniature Tigers have made a great indie pop record. They aren’t self-conscious about the “indie” or the “pop,” and the album is all the better for it. Check it out. A little sunshine never hurt anyone.
We’ve all done it. Listened to an album incessantly, and still had no idea why we enjoyed it. I recently had this experience with Miniature Tigers’ Tell it to the Volcano.
I finally figured it out last night… it’s the sunshine that gets me. These songs are ridiculously buoyant. The guitars and keyboards act as pogo sticks for anyone listening (figuratively, of course. Don’t be silly). From “Cannibal Queen” to “Last Night’s Fake Blood,” these songs, with their harmonies and handclaps, leave the listener with a smile.
