Homegrown Classics
by Kenny Bump
It felt like the late 90s were upon me. My subconscious was already anticipating that once Dead Hot Workshop finished melting faces, the notorious Gin Blossoms would have mounted the stage for a generous rousing of some old favorites. Their presence could have transported this whole place back in time to the original Long Wong’s, and I would have felt silly for not wearing plaid. But, alas, Dead Hot Workshop threw down and then just hung around to hear the amazing sounds of Tucson band, Greyhound Soul. I can’t say that I blame them.

The classic, nostalgic sounds of Dead Hot Workshop filled the night air and for that moment everything was alright. They kicked the door in with “Mexican Jones”. It felt right with our state’s current issues. The crowd was definitely into it. Even though this show went late into the night with Dead Hot taking the stage around 11:10, the exhaustion was quickly wiped away by their mere presence. “Clover” appeared to be the crowd’s favorite for sure. As the instantly recognizable guitar riff pierced the room, Dead Hot had completely taken this place as their own. I imagine this happens every time the take any stage.

Greyhound Soul brought the southwestern feel to the room. Frontman Joe Pena definitely can put on a show all by himself. I have to insert that my personal favorite song of the night was probably “Freaks” off of Greyhound appropriately titled LP, Freaks. Most of the songs that they cast headlong into the night at Hollywood Alley stung of twangy heartbreak sentiment. Their songs breathe whispers of hope, but the sullen, sad guitar riffs bring a bluesy feel that leaves a lasting impression. In fact, I could have seen Greyhound take the stage with someone like The Allman Brothers any day.

I must clear up that I did not grow up here in Arizona, but for this night, I felt like I got a glimpse into what it must have been like. These bands are two of the most professional and seamless that I have had the privilege of seeing. I suggest that you check them out soon.
