On September 12, bands from all over the Valley will gather to pay homage to Mark Kopentis, musician and local legend. Mark served local music in a variety of ways: an accomplished musician, guitarist for Shelby James and the Crying Shames, professor of studio recording at Scottsdale Community College, mentor, father, husband, and friend. His recent and unexpected passing on July 16 stunned friends and fans alike.
Some of the local bands Mark worked with over the years are coming together in remembrance at the Ruby Room on September 12. Los Guys, Tierra Del Fuego, Juarez, Rum Tenor and Shelby James Graber will perform.
Over the past weeks, many musicians shared their sense of loss and warm memories at shows, in conversations, and in countless other ways.
Shelby James Graber, Mark’s bandmate and longtime friend, described him as, “The best guitar player I’ve ever known… very generous, very giving, kind.”
Emmett DeGuvera of Tramps and Thieves cited Mark as an integral force in the band’s development. Mark recorded the group’s first album for a promise they would pay him when they could (which they did). Fellow Tramp Scott Howard wrote on the band’s website, “as some of you know our good friend, producer, collaborator, fellow-conspirator mark kopenits died on july 16. it has been tough. it continues to be tough. our hearts go out to his family and the many, many people who are hurting. we hurt with you.”
Mark Zubia of Los Guys recorded his two most recent albums with Mark Kopentis. Of his friend and collaborator, Zubia said, "We spent a lot of creative time together. I couldn't have done it without him."
Shelby captured the sentiment of many regarding Mark, “He was a good friend to me.”
