What is a trip to Scottsdale without a stop at one of the fabulous wine bars found therein? That being said, recently I made my way into 5th and Wine in the heart of Downtown Scottsdale.
To be quite honest, I found myself there twice within the span of a week. The first time, I went reluctantly to celebrate a friend’s birthday. For the occasion, I was advised to dress “nice.” After all, this is Scottsdale, where yuppies meet to mate with glasses of white zinfandel in their well manicured hands.
I’m being judgmental… I recognize that, but I am occasionally judgmental and that was the attitude I sauntered into 5th and Wine with.
Elegant yet easy-going, 5th and Wine is a mix of upscale wine bar, enticing eatery, gallery space, and a good friend’s living room. It’s tempting to forgo dinner in lieu of the extensive appetizer menu including the creative Bruschetta toppings like Apples, Brie, Fig Jam, and Agave Drizzle or Hummus, Chive, and Saffron Oil.
The knowledgeable staff can recommend a wine to compliment any dish. Hats off to John, our waiter, who remembered us despite a switch to our regular clothes (which often consists of ratty old t-shirts) and also remembered the most convoluted order I ever heard placed.
The locale doesn’t skimp on the more interesting aspects of any establishment: the art and music. The vibrant work of Ron Burns adorns the walls and the bar frequently hosts musicians in the evening. On our second visit, we were treated to the musical stylings of Jack Young. With a voice both warm and guileless, Young lures listeners away from conversation and seems to have a tune for everyone, Bob Marley and Johnny Cash fans alike.
A trip to 5th and Wine is a great finish to any day in Scottsdale.
