This Wasn't Our Plan
Electronica.

Often, when bringing this genre of music up in conversation, I will invariably get the response of someone beat-boxing the classic, 4/4, rave-disco-house beat with its throaty bass and a hi-hat through teeth. You know the one. And although Peachcake's new EP This Wasn't Our Plan has plenty of that perfect dance rhythm, it offers oh so much more.
Releasing their first EP Chain Letter in 2004, Peachcake are no strangers to the music industry. They released an additional EP, We Should've Never Released This, in 2006 as well as a split Now We Have Something To Celebrate with band Less Pain Forever. In 2008, the group brought forth their first full length What Year Will You Have The World?.. and they have supplied songs to numerous compilation and benefit albums all while continuing to tour the United States and play festivals around the world. Whew.

This Wasn't Our Plan is a sneak peak in a way. The first three songs are from their forthcoming second full length Unbelievable Souls, the fourth is a demo of a new song, and the last is a remix of the second song by DJ Semuta. Current members Stefan Pruett, Mike McHale, and David Jackman began working on their new material as early as 2009, entering the recording studio Audioconfusion a year later. A year after that we now have a kickass EP that leaves me wanting the entire full length.

This Wasn't Our Plan is the first release from Peachcake without original co-creator John O'Keefe. To me, this album sounds more mainstream/pop than their others. While definitely still retaining a indie-arthouse-experimental feel to it, you can definitely hear why the first single "You Matter" was picked up by the TNT series "Hawthorne." Widening their audience is pretty much the only thing Peachcake can do at this point and I am in support of their increasing exposure.

Like fellow Valley acts Super Stereo and Jonathan Sakas, Peachcake is pushing the electronic-pop sound to new heights.  A Peachcake show is truly one to experience, and currently, their are plenty of opportunities to do so. Every Saturday in August Peachcake will be holding residence at the Rogue Bar in Scottsdale with tons of great supporting acts opening up. A "Peach Pass" is available for $6, saving you the cost of one of the show's. Additionally, they will be opening for Buck 65 and Sole & The Skyrider Band on August 10th at Chaser's AND for Neon Trees September 3rd at the Marquee. As you can see, these boys are busy!
