Morgan McNally
April 1, 2011
by Erica Shafer
Morgan feared if she got a tattoo, bad things would happen in her life. Sick of living in fear, she got three tattoos and her father fell horribly ill and was in the hospital for many weeks. Well, guess what, she wasn’t too fond of hospitals either.

Seeing her father in low conditions created a moment of realization for her of his mortality. She has always romanticized her dad’s life; he taught her to be an artist, to live outside of the normative standards, and to believe. “By lessons he taught me, he will never ever be forgotten” says Morgan as she passes a lighter to a nearby friend.

McNally is ready to a continuous extraordinary thank you to her father. She wants to find the most ridiculous and grand projects that simply say, “thank you.”

Morgan’s first project is called thousandforathousand wherein she produces piece of art that “costs” a promise of a good deed that the “buyer” thinks will make the world a better place. This project was posted on the Urban Outfitters blog which boosted the website hits to 300-400 a day!

Her second project is titled Take a Fear, Leave a Fear. This project seems self-explanatory, but you write down a fear, place it in one of the project boxes, and mentally let it go. If you decide to take one out of the box, you might discover more about how others work. Morgan’s hope for this project is to help people be more understanding of others.

Her third project is called Project Uncomfortable. Here, she is getting 100 people to tell her what makes them uncomfortable, and she will take photos of these things. Morgan seeks to help people move beyond those little fears.

Through To Say Thank You, Morgan has two hopes. First of all, she hopes to encourage others to be less afraid to talk about feeling and say thank you. Also, Morgan believes the idea of paying it forward is romantic in theory, so it should be romantic in practice and expresses this belief through her work.

“This is just my sick way of figuring out what makes people tick, and what keeps them from ticking.”

Morgan has tackled these huge projects recently but still manages to keep up her own visual art. In the past six months, she has had her art shown in many places around town including The Tire Pit, Conspire, Sutra Midtown, Soul Indictus, and Practical Art.
Have you ever been afraid that if you do something, another unrelated thing will react negatively from your initial reaction? I’m sure most of us played “If you step on a crack it will break your mother’s back” as children. All we needed to do jump over the cracks in the sidewalk and we were certain our mothers would in good health. Morgan McNally had a similar fear, along with many others that were waiting to be conquered.
