Fathers Day

Dad Deserves The Breast
This Father's Day I decided to give my pops Dad Deserves The Breast by Phoenix band Fathers Day. He was surprised to say the least.
Now my dad's a pretty hep cat. He really only listens to new music and he covers the gamut on different genres. But something about opening his gift in the "Australian-themed" restaurant we were in and seeing the hilarious cover to this album threw him off just a little.

Excellent.

But that feeling quickly passed and he showed it off to the rest of my family. We all had a good laugh. Later that week I asked him what he thought of the album and he happily informed me it was a little too "punky" for his tastes, although he really liked the lyrics. He said it reminded him of one of my old bands...

Now, something to keep in mind, the members of Fathers Day are deplorable men. Frank Brando, Andy Denver, Juan P. Mendoza and Douglas Patton are all misogynistic, racist, homophobic, bigoted arseholes. The clever names they use to classify themselves fully personify their mode of being: Golf Dad, Single Dad, Psycho-Military Dad and Business Dad, respectfully. They advocate the beating of women (and children), celebrating Sheriff Joe Arpaio's "good" deeds for Arizona, and sending faggot-illegal aliens back to Mexico.

So why write on them? Why should we even care about a bunch of right-wing, hippie-hating, Arpaio advocating blowhards?! Easy, because Fathers Day is punk fucking rock and these angry dad's express their frustrations through loud, thrash music.

Now I know what some of you may be thinking. How can these douche bags with their mustaches and Rush Limbaugh-esque attitude play punk rock? Well that answer is actually quite simple. With all these new bands and musicians these days creating music by themselves on a computer, auto-tuning their voices and not having a single "real" instrument on their songs, Fathers Day plays music akin to what they grew up listening too: loud, fast, rocknroll.

Similar to Broloaf, another Valley band made entirely up of 'bro's" who play hard-core punk, Fathers Day rubs you wrong in just the right way. This band knows perfectly well that you probably won't agree with their beliefs but they could give a fuck. Just like the original punks creating a new style of music, Fathers Day goes against the norms and says things you probably don't want to hear. Pretty gutsy for band that mostly plays the art scene in Phoenix. It's probably because those art-hippie-kids are the ones who need to hear their message the most.

Every track on Dad Deserves The Breast is fairly listenable. It's pretty fucking good actually for a bunch of old dad's playing punk. "I'm A Dad," "My Property" and "This Really Happened" are personal favorites of mine. Although "You Can Tuck Yourself In" and the title track stand out too. It even has a cover of the 35+ year old song "Beat On The Brat" by the Ramones. My dad's favorite is the opener, "Do The Dad." You really can't go wrong with this album, it has something for everyone.

Pick up Dad Deserves The Breast by Fathers Day. Enjoy it on your way to work or to the golf course. Pop it on when you're on a hot date or barreling a tank through Afghanistan, it's tits!

(Disclaimer: YabYumMusic knows perfectly well that Fathers Day is just one of  the many, zany projects cooked up by Ryan Avery. They've been around since 2004 and have gone through some line-up changes. That's not important. What is important is the extent to which these guys take this theatrical-performance band and the characters involved therein [including complete Facebook profiles]. This article was written with tongue firmly planted in cheek.)
