Chookie

by Mike McQuillian
Dogbreth's music has the kind of unabashed sentimental streak that could go horribly wrong. Thankfully, the music never strays into Michael Bolton territory. Jemsek's warble-infused voice lends credibility to the songs, sounding like the shy kid trying to tell a girl she's pretty. Jemsek sounds like he means what he says, and the listener is drawn in, rooting for the kid to get the girl.

Evidence of the band's sentimental side: Both “Just a Kid” and “Rockin' With Gramma” are tributes to Jemsek's grandmother. A ballsy move for a band on their first album. Perhaps not coincidentally, these are two of the best songs on the record.

Dogbreth don't need you to think their every note is a revelation. And being millionaire rock stars isn't what they're after. But they'd think it was really cool if you had fun. Listening to Chookie, you will.
Tempe foursome Dogbreth play pop punk tunes that are tailor-made for unselfconscious rocking out. At the show, in the car, or in the kitchen with a broomstick microphone.

Named for lead singer Tristan Jemsek's grandmother, their album Chookie is a blast of sunny guitar jangle. Wrapping up in less than 30 minutes, it doesn't wear out its welcome, giving listeners just enough time to bounce like a motherfucker until they drop.
